University Building Refurbishment and Extension

Project Overview

GPJ were appointed to provide mechanical and electrical building services design for the refurbishment and extension of an existing university building.

The project involved the extensive refurbishment of the existing building together with a new extension, creating new lecture, studio, tutorial and office spaces.

Our Involvement

GPJ developed the coordinated mechanical and electrical design for the project, including heating, ventilation, domestic water, lighting, power, data, controls, fire alarm and security systems.

The design incorporated a combination of underfloor heating, radiators and tempered air systems, with ventilation solutions developed around the different uses and occupancy requirements of the teaching and studio spaces.

GPJ produced the design drawings, schedules and detailed mechanical and electrical specification for the works, supporting the project through tender and construction.

Key Project Considerations

The project combined the refurbishment of an existing building with new construction, requiring new building services to be coordinated around the existing structure and infrastructure.

The different uses of the building required a range of engineering solutions across lecture theatres, studios, tutorial spaces and offices, with the building services design developed around the specific requirements of each area.

A key part of the design process was developing a coordinated M&E solution that could be practically installed within the existing building while supporting the operational requirements of a modern teaching environment.
