Island Hall

GPJ Consulting Engineers were employed to design the Mechanical and Electrical services for this new community hall on the remote island of St Agnes located 29 miles off the Cornish mainland.

The new hall building was to be a timber framed extension off the existing hall building.  The building was designed to be a multipurpose facility for the local community.  It comprised a main meeting room, 6 workspace units, storage areas, kitchen and plant room.

The building was heated by ground source heat pumps providing underfloor heating throughout.  Wastewater was treated on site with a packaged digester with the clean outfall discharged to sea.  Rainwater is collected and utilised for toilet flushing.  Photovoltaic panels generate approximately 10KW of electricity to reduce the grid loading.

The building was awarded a BREEAM excellent rating and was recipient of a Sustainable Cornwall Award in the Sustainable Built Environment category in 2014 and was nominated for ‘Eco Project of the Year’ in the Michelmores South West Property Awards.

Solomon Browne Memorial Hall

GPJ Consulting Engineers were employed by Penzance District Council to design the Mechanical and Electrical services for the refurbishment of this old sail loft within the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole.

Named after the ill-fated lifeboat, the Solomon Browne Memorial Hall has been designed to become a hub for community activities. The building was an empty shell and required major construction works to make it habitable.

New electrical supplies, heating, domestic services, lighting, alarms, communications and ventilation were all designed to sympathetically blend within the historical building. The lower floor of the building was split to form a small visitors centre and to become a home for the world famous Christmas light displays during out of season periods.

RMA Sandhurst

The Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst is the UK’s home of Army officer training.  This 200 year old building was in need of a refurbishment and required a new roof along with various M&E upgrades to future proof the building for many years to come.

GPJ consulting Engineers were employed initially to carry out an M&E condition survey of the roof spaces prior to its refurbishment. This highlighted a number of work packages which were designed and specified including a new lightning protection system, roof space fire alarm systems, safe access lighting, pipework modifications and new ventilation installations to serve the trainee washrooms.

Services were maintained during the works to enable the building to function.  GPJ also provided site inspections and supervision for the M&E work packages.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals

GPJ Consulting Engineers are employed by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) to provide professional building services design and consultation in line with Health Technical Memorandums (HTMs) and are appointed Authorising Engineers for ‘Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems’ throughout the RCHT sites.

We have been working with RCHT for many years and have supported them through some extremely challenging yet interesting projects from complex controls installations through to simple heating networks in all areas of the hospital from Accident and Emergency through to the Maternity wards.

The following provides a summary of our projects in the Healthcare Sector:

  • Authorising Engineer duties for Ventilation and Air conditioning systems
  • Energy reduction and reliability actions to include replacement Air Handling Units (AHU’s), Hot Water Heaters, Motors, lighting and Boiler Plant.
  • Environmental design and control to spaces of specific clinical service
  • Fire Safety Improvements to include full Fire Damper audit and inspection/test regime
  • Vacuum Drainage Systems to areas served by problematic drainage
  • Ventilation, Hot Water, Heating, Cooling and Drainage systems refurbishment
  • Electrical Supply upgrades including Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS), Emergency power generation and electrical distribution improvements
  • Building Management Control (BMS) improvements and rationalisation
  • Works to improve maintenance efficiency and safety
  • Biosafety, Biocontainment and Cross Contamination consultation
  • Consultation with Clinical Staff regarding engineering requirements with regards to best practice, maintenance and HTM.

Additionally we have consulted with other NHS Sites across the UK including Nuffield Hospital, Stoke Mandeville and Barkantine Health Practice. We have also designed modular operating theatres, complete with ventilation plant for fabrication in the UK prior to shipping to their end use in Bangladesh.

Working closely alongside estates and clinical staff we are able to tailor the schemes specifically to suit both the existing installations and the tight constraints of a working hospital to provide the best solution.

Among our staff, we have 2 Authorising Engineers, with many years of health care experience and checking compliance with NHS standards.

Lighthouse Apartments

GPJ Consulting Engineers were appointed directly by the Client to provide a full detailed mechanical and electrical design for the refurbishment of the existing hotel into 14 luxury apartments overlooking the famous Fistral Beach.

A detailed site survey of the existing hotel building identified existing services to be removed and adapted to suit the new design. Negotiations with the utility providers enabled a co-ordinated installation of gas, electricity, main water and sewerage services.

For the Mechanical installation, a new distributed mains gas installation, condensing boilers, underfloor heating, ventilation and domestic services were all specified and designed ready for contractor detailing and installation.

A new building electrical supply, mains distribution, small power, alarms, television, integrated sound system and communications were designed.

Gllyngdune Gardens

GPJ Consulting Engineers were appointed by Carrick Leisure to provide M&E designs and ongoing project supervision for this exciting heritage project. The original Gardens and Orangery were constructed in 1907 and have generally remained the same over the years. The Client felt that the building could be upgraded to suit a more diverse audience.

New lighting, small power, audio visual, alarm systems were designed along with new gas fired heating, domestic hot water, ventilation, bar and cellar systems to provide a multi purpose civic amenity.

DLU Brynsworthy

GPJ Consulting were appointed by North Devon District Council to provide M&E Engineering Services for this project to turn a redundant meat processing factory into a new hub for their Direct Labour Force and waste recycling services.

Newquay Sports Centre

GPJ Consulting Engineers were appointed by the Council to provide a detailed Mechanical and Electrical design for the new sports centre. The centre consisted of a main 4 court sports hall, glass backed squash courts, changing rooms, social bar area and rifle range. Externally a large plant building combined with field changing facilities and clubhouse were constructed.

Gas fired condensing boilers, heat recovery ventilation, low energy lighting and gas fired radiant heating were all installed. The external field changing rooms benefited from Natural stack ventilation.

Field lighting and external services were also refurbished to provide national level pitch illumination.

Jubilee Pool

GPJ Consulting Engineers are currently designing a new geothermal heated spa pool to be constructed within the Grade 2 listed Art Deco Lido in Penzance.

This will be the first geothermal heated lido in the Country.

Using geothermal heat from 1.5Km below the ground surface we are designing a system to utilise the heat and use it to heat the seawater to create a spa environment.
